Chief information security officers come out from the basement – FT.com

The resignation of Target’s chief information officer last month in the wake of a cyber attack on the US retailer highlights the growing public profile of senior executives responsible for data security.

Where the head of data security – often dubbed the chief information security officer (CISO) or “see-so” – was once a relatively insignificant member of the IT department, the rise in the frequency and severity of security breaches in recent years means CISOs face ever closer scrutiny.
